Welcome to Walking Oar Galloways, a family-run, first-generation Galloway beef operation located in the heart of southern Oregon! We have officially launched our website and have our first steer available. Orders will need to be placed by July 2nd, and will be ready to go into your freezer in the next 3-5 weeks! Our steers will be available to purchase as a whole, half, or quarter of beef. A whole steer yields roughly 360-540lbs of meat, a half 180-270lbs, and a quarter 90-135lbs. Installed and ready for water to be turned down the ditch. There was a time when it was believed that all flood irrigation (letting the water flow across the ground) was bad because of the amount of water used in comparison to sprinkled irrigation. Sprinkled does in fact work well for seasonal crop irrigation. Seasonal crops have shallow root systems. On the other hand, some varieties of perennial grasses can develop root systems that are up to eight feet deep if there is water down deep in the soil. These deep root systems sequester large amounts of carbon, and allow the grasses to withstand drought, providing nutrients for animals, habitat for invertebrates and small wildlife, and preventing wind and water erosion under a wide range of climate variables.

This irrigation box looks pretty simple. But the 38 boards and 165 screws that make up this box will give us greater ability to adjust the amount of water we are delivering to portions of our pasture.

Supplying green pastures for cows isn't as easy as set it and forget it. This section of irrigation ditch, which supplies water to part of pasture has been on the list of things that could be improved.
